Since its establishment in 1969, the Department of Communication Science of the University of South Africa has grown considerably and distinguished itself as a dynamic and credible leader in the communication field. In keeping abreast with communication developments on a national and international level, the dynamism of the communication field and the growing emphasis on effective communication between individuals, in groups and in organisations, the Department of Communication Science today studies almost every aspect of the field of Communication Science.

An academic staff of 35 are responsible for providing education to an annual average of 26 000 student registrations, 260 honours students and more than 64 Masters and doctoral students. Almost 70% of our students are from the previously disadvantaged communities, while student numbers from the rest of Africa are increasing. Being a distance education university, the majority of our students are already employed at various levels in the communication departments of private and public organisations, government departments, the media and entertainment industries, public relations, and the teaching professions.
Publications and seminars
The Department is renowned for its academic prominence and issues the bi-annual accredited subject journal Communicatio (South African Journal for Communication Theory and Research), since 1974. The Department was also responsible for the publication of the well-known series of research monographs Communicamus and a text book series under the title Course Books in Communication, both published by Juta.

The Department is primarily a teaching department. Research is confined to the individual research of lecturers and postgraduate students for the purpose of advanced degrees or research on new course developments and developing fields. However, throughout the years the Department has distinguished itself in terms of its focus on communication theory and research methodology, and is known for its contribution in the fields of the phenomenology of communication, organisational communication with the emphasis on communication by objectives, discourse theory and semiotics. The Department is continuously doing substantive research on distance education and the teaching of communication through the means of distance education. Since 1995, the Department’s research focus has increasingly shifted to telecommunications, international communication (telecommunications and information policy), marketing communication, public relations, advertising and policy studies. A series of academic seminars is held annually, providing lecturers of the Department and guest lecturers the opportunity to present information on research results, course developments and current communication development issues.

The Department encourages and actively supports the drive for community services. It offers courses in communication skills (including the planning of communication campaigns), effective communication in organisations, and public speaking. The Department also presents practical workshops to students in community television, community radio and community journalism.
  Membership of societies
The Department is a member of the following societies:
• The South African Communication Association.
• The International Communication Association.
• The International Association of Media and Communication Research.
• The National Communication Association.
• International Association of Business Communication.
As the only academic Department of Communication in South Africa accredited with the Public Relations Institute of South Africa (PRISA), an undergraduate degree will earn students five extra points towards accreditation.
