迪克•范•戴克生于密苏里州西普兰斯，二次大战后从空军部队退役，后在夜总会参加哑剧表演，被海报宣传为
“快乐的哑巴”。50年代中期开始在电视剧中出演角色，1963年进入好莱坞，主演歌舞片《再见！小鸟》（又译《欢乐今宵》），一举成名。1964-1966年以《范戴克摇滚音乐剧》连续三年获得电视艾米奖。其它主要影片还有《傻女十八变》、《良缘巧遇》、《美国式离婚》、《有点犯傻》、《喜剧演员》、《飞天万能车》以及九十年代的热门悬疑剧《谋杀诊断》等等。近期他出演了本•斯蒂勒的卖座影片《博物馆奇妙夜》的一、二两部。
